Practical Information
Getting Around
This itinerary requires a rental car or private shuttle services, as public transportation between these destinations is time-consuming and complicated. Rental cars offer flexibility and are affordable in Costa Rica, though roads can be rough, especially to Monteverde. Alternatively, book private shuttle services between destinations - many hotels can arrange these. The drives are long but scenic. International flights arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José. Budget $50-100 per day for rental car including insurance, or $50-80 per person for private shuttles between major destinations.
Book Ahead
Book accommodations at least 2-3 months ahead during high season (December-April). Reserve guided tours for Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, Manuel Antonio National Park, and Sky Adventures zip-lining at least 1-2 weeks in advance. Hot springs resorts in Arenal can fill up, so book ahead if you have a specific venue in mind.
Packing Essentials
Layers for cool Monteverde climate, rain jacket, hiking shoes with good traction, swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars for wildlife viewing, waterproof bag for electronics, daypack, reusable water bottle, and both warm and lightweight clothing for varying elevations
Total Budget
$840-1,240 for 7 days (excluding international flights and alcohol)
Customize Your Trip
Budget Version
Stay in hostels or budget hotels ($20-40/night), eat at local sodas instead of tourist restaurants, use public buses where possible (though this adds significant travel time), skip guided tours in favor of self-guided exploration, choose free beaches over paid hot springs, and pack lunches. Visit Arenal National Park independently rather than booking tours. This can reduce daily costs to $70-100 per day.
Luxury Upgrade
Stay at high-end eco-lodges and resorts like Nayara Springs in Arenal and luxury properties in Manuel Antonio with private pools and ocean views. Book private guided tours for all activities, enjoy spa treatments, dine at upscale restaurants, arrange private transfers with comfortable vehicles, add helicopter tours over the volcano, and include additional activities like sportfishing or private catamaran cruises. Budget $350-500+ per day.
Family-Friendly
Add extra time at La Paz Waterfall Gardens where kids love the animal exhibits. Choose easier trails in national parks and skip challenging hikes. Book family rooms or vacation rentals with kitchens to save on meals. Replace zip-lining with gentler Sky Walk bridges if needed. Add beach days in Manuel Antonio for sandcastle building. Many hotels offer kids' clubs and pools. Consider staying in one location longer to reduce travel time with children.
